My sister thinks I should be a tweaker.
This week is another one of those where both Doreen and I have been too busy reminiscing to get our writing done. We both made our way to St. FX for homecoming this past weekend. It was great fun to see life at X these days. I believe, however, I was wise to make my exit early. I left Doreen with her classmates to enjoy their homecoming.
After leaving X to head for Cape Breton I got a text from Doreen. “You need to be a tweaker”. I love my sister but she does have some strange ideas from time to time. I thought for sure this was one of them as I am more familiar with the second definition than the first (see below).
Tweaker (Merriam-Webster)
1 : one who makes minor adjustments to something (such as electronic equipment) to improve its performance or effectiveness : a person who tweaks something
2 slang : a person who illicitly uses methamphetamine and especially crystal meth
For the last few weeks I have been spending time at both Doreen’s home and her cottage and it has been my job to “tweak” the decor. It turns out that house tweaking is actually a thing and Doreen was actually suggesting a little side business for me. I will admit, I felt decidedly better once that was clarified.
I quite enjoy the process of finishing a room. Putting those finishing touches on it that make you feel comfortable the moment you walk in. I truly believe that is what we have achieved here at the little red house. It feels like home and that means a lot to a Cape Bretoner. Your average caper always feels the pull of the Island no matter where in the world they may roam. So I feel very privileged to be given the chance to make the little red house feel like a piece of home for our family.
This type of work makes me happy, and in fact makes me feel a little closer to my mom. Anyone who knew her would agree that she was a born “tweaker”.
So today’s advice is simple. Take the time to do the things that make your heart feel good.
Doreen Here - The above are some before and after shots. A sample to show you why I think she should start tweaking!! She can take the things you love and incorporate a sense of style that makes your space welcoming!!
Note: A huge thank you also goes to all the family members and friends that have made our Little Red House a home! We are thankful for all of you!!
