The Value of a Call
Today our Dad would have turned 72. It is still hard to believe that he is gone. This is the first time in my life that I did not have a very important call to make on April 24th. It was that feeling of missing out on that call that moved me to write something tonight. If you still have your parents around, please be sure you take the time to make that call. When they are no longer with you, it is then that you understand the value of those minutes spent exchanging stories and laughs.
I think back through all the years of calls, and I smile. There were times that I would try to get up before my Dad to be the one that woke him up on this Birthday, but it never worked. He always managed to be close by the phone to get his birthday wishes. Even in the years when we were not on the best of terms, we took the time for that birthday call. Even if it was a short call, we made time for each other.
It made me reflect on that value of even the shortest of conversations. The conversations that may be to talk about nothing much at all but remind people that they are loved. In the fast pace of our world, I think we sometimes forget that. I know I forget sometimes and today I am reminded of their value. So, take the time for the ones you love and the ones that fill your cup. You will not regret it.
